Mobilegeddon – 1 Month Later

It’s been almost two years since we posted about responsive sites and the importance of making sure your online presence is mobile ready. We remember because the publication of such a post resulted in a rather healthy debate on Twitter with some advocating that it’s really not that important.

Well we hate to say we told you so but . . . we told you so.

A month ago Google put in place a new algorithm that focuses on the mobility of your website. That is, if your website does not have the capacity to adapt to mobile or tablet screens you will find you Google ranking (SEO) affected.

Some sources are saying that this could be as bad as your search ranking being cut in half in one fail swoop. We’re only a month in and businesses are watching their SEO rankings closely and so far they’ve seen a drop but nothing that has people panicking. . . Yet.

The good news is that it will be over the coming year that we will begin to see it’s true impact so there is still time to make sure your website is ready for what is being dubbed ‘mobilegeddon.’

How To Check If Your Website Is Ready

This is quite a simple step but one that many haven’t yet completed. Take a mobile phone, open up your browser and enter your websites address.

If:

• You have to zoom in to navigate
• The images are tiny and undefined
• You find it difficult to select categories or fill in forms

Then your website is not ready for Mobilegeddon and you will find your SEO severely affected, dropping page ranking radically.

What To Do If Your Website Isn’t Ready

If your website isn’t ready for the oncoming SEO apocalypse it may be time to have a look at your website in a new way and maybe even giving it a little spring cleaning.

To make your online presence mobile friendly your website will have to be looked at from the back end. We can help advise you on all elements of making your website fit for any mobile or tablet screen.

Once you have a streamlined adaptable website you have to make sure that it is present on social media. The current Google algorithm focuses on your social presence. 1 Facebook Security Tip Everyone Should Do Now

First Things First: The Information You Share With Your Friends Is Not Restricted To Their Eyes Only

Recently there has been much talk over FB and privacy rights. You may have even taken part in sharing the ‘better safe than sorry’ status that was doing the rounds recently. In more recent news the hacking of the USA’s Central Command’s Twitter and Youtube account has made Social Media security a hot topic.

Unfortunately through signing up with Facebook anything that you make public can be used by 3rd parties. It’s in the sign up fine print and it has always been the same way. That does not mean however, that you should instantly panic and immediately boycott Facebook. Take a read of this article to gain a better understanding of the matter.

Furthermore, the more malicious of these Apps can be used to hack you Social Media accounts like with the USA’s Central Command’s accounts. You should be careful when accepting any App request for access and if your gut says there’s something iffy then trust it! It’s usually right!

This is not what I want to cover today. Today I would like to cover something that has flown under the radar of many a Facebook user.

3rd Person Access Via Your Friends

Many of you would have signed up to 3rd party systems that you can access via Facebook sign in. Spotify, Netflix, Candy Crush to name but a few. Many of these Apps are doing what marketers do on a daily basis, they use your Facebook profile information to tailor their services and advertise the right products to your FB page. Their request looks something like this:

They tell you what they can access when you sign in for the first time via Facebook and if you are like me I accepted these terms. I know the grey area that is Facebook privacy and I know that for the most part it is up to me to govern how much information I put up there.

What I did not realise until very recently was that my more private information, information that I have allowed only friends to see, can be made available to some Apps out there despite me not using or allowing them.

How? Because my friends use them and have accepted their access requests.

Before you get angry with your friends, you’re doing the exact same thing and these Apps are clever. They tell you that they will gain access to your contact list but do not need to tell you what they do with that contact list.

If your friend uses a 3rd party App on Facebook and have accepted their terms then automatic settings on YOUR Facebook account means that those Apps have access to the following pieces of information:

I’m not sure about you but I’m pretty uncomfortable with Apps that I have not given my authority to having access to information such as my photos and current location. Even if it’s just potentially.

If you feel the same way then go into your Facebook account and select settings.

Go into ‘Apps’ on the left hand side.

Scroll down to the bottom and select ‘Apps Others Use’ and edit your settings according to your comfort level.

And there you have it! Isn’t it a great feeling to essentially blockade those sneaky Apps?! When it comes to this aspect of sharing information it really is ‘Better Safe Than Sorry’.

5 SEO Tricks You Didn’t Know

SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is a term that I am sure you are hearing more and more these days.  To put it simply SEO means ‘how to get Google (as the main Search Engine we will be using Google throughout) to notice my website.’  Think about a shop in a shopping centre and all the methods store managers use to make sure people visit them.  Leafleting and standard advertisement works but nothing is more effective than having the shopping centre promote them and push their offerings to visitors.  The exact same applies to your online store.  To drive more traffic to your website you have to be found on the 1st page of Google search, 2nd page at a push.

There are  2 main ways of doing this:

1)         Pay Google to put you at the top of the 1st page.

2)         Use a few of our simple SEO tips to appeal to the Google algorithms and push you to the top organically. Where are these Tips I’m talking about? Keep reading.

1.Social Media

Nova touched upon the relationship between SEO and Social Media in our blog post ‘Social Media & SEO A Match Made in Heaven’ where we emphasized that your page ranking can be directly impacted by your Social Media presence.  There are numerous reasons why Social Media is so great for your page ranking.  Firstly, it is a great platform to promote Specifically the more ‘shares’ you have the higher Google will rank you, and the best way so make it easy to share is the key point here.

Google’s newest algorithm update ‘Hummingbird’ specifically looks at the standing of your Social Media presence. Rather than backlinks it would seem Google is actively more interested in the amount of ‘Shares’ your FB page generates as well as the popularity of your Google + page.

2.Interesting Content

This follows on well from Social Media I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, genuine interesting content is vital to a successful SEO campaign. Remember one of Nova’s key rules:

The two go hand in hand. If you generate good content and put it out there conversations will start to happen. Google bots will pick up on the new interesting additions to your website as well as the ‘Shares’ ‘Likes’ and ‘Retweets’ that come with it, all of which ticks Google’s SEO boxes pushing your website up in their page rankings.

One of the best ways to do both is by regularly updating a Blog page on your website. Now we’re not talking once a week every week, but just once a month a 500 word post offering a genuine insight into your industry and what you do as a company can significantly help your SEO ranking.

3.Webmaster Tools

If you are serious about increasing your Search Engine ranking and I mean serious then you have to get to grips with Webmaster Tools. I use Google Webmaster Tools as it works well with Google Analytics. Where Webmaster Tools aid help you is in pointing out problems on your site that cause Google Bots to send negative SEO readings back to Google. Once rectified it will give you a positive SEO boost. So where Analytics tells you about the visitors you’re already attracting, Webmaster Tools helps you attract a whole new group of visitors.

4.Get more mobile friendly

Google have just reported changes to be initiated in the USA which will hit the UK soon.  Now Google will highlight when their algorithms find a website that is not mobile responsive, this will have the negative effect of encouraging people to avoid your site.  This then has a knock on effect on your page ranking and so should be a serious consideration when creating or re-developing your website.

The fact is Google prefers responsive web design not just for you, but for them also.  It’s more efficient for Google bots to trawl through the site, additionally if your site is repsponsive therefore combining your desktop and mobile site onto one URL it makes the site easier to share and for people to engage with.  If a visitor is unhappy when trying to view a mobile site on a desktop it creates a higher bounce rate causing problems for Google’s external link algorithm which will then harm your SEO.

5.Change the way you think about keywords

Previously Google focused on the words used in a particular search to evaluate the keywords you use in your site.  Now Google will also be looking at the intent of the searcher and will look to predict the answer of their next searches dependent on a previous search.  For example if you were to search “Who is Jennifer Lawrence?” then it will come up with her Wikipedia and IMDB pages.  If you were to then search “What films has she been in?”  then Google will presume that you mean Jennifer Lawrence and provide you to links about The Hunger Games, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.  To get to grips with this new SEO style start thinking about the subject of your website, what information it provides and where your service is located.

The Two Things I Think Everyone Should Know How To Do On Twitter And Facebook

Forgive me if what you are about to read are well known tricks in your Social Media Bag. Some of you may even ‘tut’ in disgrace but I do not mind. Perhaps I should have brought this to the attention of my followers long ago but it only just hit me that I regularly see people complaining about problems that these two tricks resolve.

And it hit me it wasn’t that they were forgetting to do it, no it was that they have never been told.

So do forgive me if this is all old news to you but allow me to bring these old tricks to light once more to aid the thousands of new users joining the plains of the Social Media world every day.

1. How to Make Sure That All Of Your Followers See Your Tweet To Another Account.

Are you a Social Media marketer who regularly checks analytics and think that some of your tweets to other accounts just do not have the same reach?

Or do you simply like to know that all of your followers can see when you tweet another follower?

Well then this tip is for you.

When Twitter guides you through the first steps in creating your first Tweet it fails to point out one major factor.

If you Tweet someone like this:

Without ANYTHING before the @ then the only accounts that will see that tweet are those that follow BOTH you and that account.

This can severely cut into the exposure of your tweets limiting your engagement and potentially impacting future business.

In order to avoid this and ensure that all of your followers see your Tweet you just have to put something else before the @

For Example:

OR EVEN

And there you have it as simple as a ‘.’

I think it’s shocking, SHOCKING, that Twitter doesn’t teach you this when you first sign up

2. How To Control Everything On Your Facebook Profile

On a daily basis I read someone worried about a post being put onto their Facebook profile without his or her permission.

Or worried that a post might be uploaded when they have limited access to Facebook and so cannot take the post down.

And they are worried for good reason. More and more employers are admitting to checking current employers out on Facebook and if they don’t like what they see will bring in the employee for a warning or outright fire them.

Even worse there has been a dramatic increase in employers not hiring future employees over what they have managed to discover online. That means that if your security settings aren’t top notch that recent status that your friend has tagged you in, you know the one about you drinking until you passed out, can mean you loosing out on a job.

Well there is a simple security setting that allows you to verify any posts about you or any posts onto your wall.

To activate this setting follow these simple steps:

1. Click on Settings in the drop down option by your profile name

2. Look to the left hand side and select ‘Timeline and Tagging.’

3. This is a pretty useful page full of settings to help protect you on Facebook. The one we’re interested in however, is the following:

4. Simply click on ‘Disabled’ and it will allow you the option to Enable this feature.  This means that from now on whenever someone tags you in a status or photo it will not show up on your timeline until you have verified it!

How To Make The Most Of Facebook, Twitter & LinkedIn For Your Business

Unless you’ve managed to avoid all forms of media over the past 5 years you would have come across at least one, if not all, of the following entities:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Linkedin

That’s not to say that you are active on all 3 or even 1 of them. Plenty of people I’ve spoken to claim to hate social media and the horse it rode in on. Furthermore, they believe that social media had no benefit for their company!!

Maybe you’re nodding your head right now or maybe you’re already thinking about what social media could do for you.

Consider the following questions:

  • Do you use Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, either personally or professionally?
  • Would like better communication with customers?
  • Would you like to talk with key thinkers in your industry?
  • Do you hold exciting events, competitions or promotions?
  • Do you like to promote positive testimonials to as many people as possible?
  • Do you love talking about what you do?

1) When creating your Facebook page apply to change the web address to include the name of your company.

So instead of:

You get:

www.facebook.com/thenovaagency

To do this go to ‘Settings’ click on ‘Page Info’ and Edit you Facebook web address.  Much easier for potential customers to find you and a great boost to your page ranking on Google!

2) When creating your twitter account & you are asked to follow a few accounts search for the following:

@bizitalk
@Ukhour
@ukbusinessrt
@thenovaagency

they actively RT (repost) any of your tweets to their huge following on your behalf.

3) On LinkedIn follow as many groups in your industry as possible. Look for ones that have a good following and whose admin are active in conversations.

This will instantly bring you into contact with other people in your industry expanding your networking group exponentially.

How to Block An App on Facebook

This is the one that I see crop up over and over again on my Facebook newsfeed.  In fact posts begging for people to stop sending them ‘Candy Crush’ or ‘Farmville’ invites is such a regular theme that it is what prompted me to write this blog post in the first place!  I’m sure you’ve been on the receiving end of one of these annoying requests, the mosquitos of the online world.  Or you are one of those who love the games and in order to progress to the next level send out pleas for help to your loyal, wonderful friends.

And who can blame you that is what friends are for right?  But whether you are the receiver or the ‘sendee’ there is something you can do to save your friendship before the addiction of the game or the influx of invites breaks you down to the point of despair.

Follow these simple steps for your own peace of mind and enjoy an app free Facebook today!

1)   Log into your Facebook account.  Select ‘Settings’

This is a pretty helpful page that can help you conquer a few different annoying notifications on Facebook.  You can restrict what a certain friend sees on your profile (without their knowledge) or block event invitations if someone you know is prone to doing so.

But that’s not what we’re here for right now, right now we want to know how to block a specific App and any invites it comes with.

To do this there are two different options:

1)   Type the name of the friend who keeps sending you the invite.  This works if there is only one repeat offender and there is the added option to block any future App invites no matter the App.

2)   Block an app completely.  This will prevent the App from gaining any information from your Facebook Page and will block all invites from any of your friends playing that particular App.  This is the option I tend to opt for.

How To Mute An Annoying Twitter Account

Has your Boss started Tweeting about and only about work?

Is a particular friend of yours posting spoilers about Game Of Thrones?

Is a company spamming you with uninteresting content a bit too much?

Yet still you do not want to un-follow them in fear of rudeness (A very British problem) or even worse that it might force their hand into un-following you.

Well Twitter may have presented you with an answer. In their infinite wisdom Twitter recently introduced (with little fanfare) a mute function that allows you to effectively ‘silence’ another account.

To do this, like with Facebook, there are two ways:

1) Straight from your newsfeed. All you have to do is click on ‘More’ at the bottom of the tweet and click ‘Mute @_________’

2) From their account. If you have taken some time to look through their account, debate whether you should, and then come to the decision that yes you need a break from their tweets for just a little while you can click on the ‘gear’ symbol to the left of the ‘following’ tab then select ‘Mute @_________’

Once you have selected the mute function their Tweets will no longer plague your Twitter feed. More importantly they will not know that you have blocked them ignorance really is bliss in this instance.

We know what you are thinking, as online marketers are we not worried that you will now go and mute our Twitter account. Honestly it hadn’t even crossed our minds because even if you were to ‘mute’ our account as long as the content we send out is interesting and of value you will still see it.

How?

Well you will still be able to see a Tweet from a muted account if it is Re-tweeted by an account you follow. Or if we think that a Tweet will be of particular use to you and directly tweet you via your handle you will still be able to see the Tweet.

So if you put out great content (and we think we do) then the mute function will not affect you!

5 Top Tips For Social Media

Every day we’re learning new things, and with Social Media new tips are sent into the online world every day at an increasing rate. Add this to the fact that being a Social Media Manager today is very different from a year ago and it is hard to keep up. Those that call themselves Social Media Managers find that their job roles and their responsibilities have shifted completely into content marketing. Now when running Social Media platforms content is key to organic and genuine interactions, sales is second to increasing reach and should be treated as a nice by product of a successful campaign and in my opinion should not be a primary aim.

Once we have accepted that Social Media is content driven it becomes a question of; how to source/generate good content and how to ensure that good content is regularly being posted at the right time.

Here are my top 5 tips for those beginning to tackle the Social Media world.

1) Set Up Google Alerts

This is brilliant in it’s simplicity and is usually overlooked. The reason that I have put this down as a Top Tip is mainly for when you’re on the go or if it slips your mind to have a look at industry related news Google will e-mail it straight to you. An added bonus is of course if you have ‘push notifications’ enabled on your phone so it notifies you. However, make sure you select your options correctly so you do not get random articles from blogs who are talking about events loosely connected with your industry.

Simply select the options that best suit your purposes, personally I set up two alerts one for ‘News’ and one for ‘blog’ results to weed out the really generic stuff.

2) TweetDeck

My relationship with Tweetdeck has suffered some highs and some lows. When first venturing into Social Media I had TweetDeck enjoying the ability to update Twitter and Facebook with one click whilst simultaneously being able to schedule posts for a later time and/or date. Then the faster performing management systems like Hootsuite and Sproutsocial (see point 4) came along. They included the ability to manage numerous accounts at once across multiple platforms not just Twitter and Facebook. Rather than try and compete TweetDeck streamlined their system and removed Facebook allowing the user to zero in on Twitter.

They realised that one problem with Twitter is simply the vast amount of information that an average user is bombarded with and the speed that it moves at. The beauty with the new TweetDeck ironically is that if focuses only on one Twitter account at a time. You can therefore have columns dedicated to the ‘Lists’ that you have lovingly created on Twitter allowing you to watch real time what your followers are up to. Or if you have a ‘List’ dedicated to leads you can see what they are up to and when they are online allowing you easier access to engage.

You can only access TweetDeck on desktop at the moment but there is an app to make accessibility easier.

3) Buffer App

I was resistant of this application when I first came across it worried that it might interfere with my posting schedule, however it has rapidly become part of my daily routine and is now a brilliant way of sourcing content.

Buffer allows you to schedule content that is it’s primary aim, it means that rather then sharing a good article that you have found straight away you can store it away and Buffer will schedule it for you. It’s newest addition is what has now won me over. Through signing in with your Twitter Account Buffer looks at what you regularly post and then tailors suggestions to you every day. This means that with one click of a button you both source and schedule good content in the most efficient of ways.

4) Management Tools

Although I’ve simply labelled this point as ‘Management Tools’ I will mainly be talking about Hootsuite and Sproutsocial as these are the two that I primarily use and have the most experience with. Both have their advantages and disadvantages but the main reason that it has made my top 5 tips is for their scheduling feature.

Sproutsocial is slightly more limited but it makes up for this with it’s easier reporting system and fantastic user interface. With Sproutsocial you can add the following accounts:

With both management systems you can schedule content for the next year if that is what you wish allowing Social Media Managers to plan campaigns months in advance and giving them the confidence that content will definitely be coming out on those dates. It also allows you to post at strategically potent times of the day maximizing reach and engagement.

5) Pulse

Pulse is one of my favourite discoveries of recent months. Recently bought by LinkedIn it had been the late Steve Job’s favourite app for it’s simplistic design and integration with all major social media platforms. Whilst I do love how easy it is to share on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, what I use Pulse for is sourcing custom content across a range of industries. It allows you to source articles from all around the web in categories tailored to your wishes. The articles are then displayed in a visual format that is pleasing to the eye and when you click through to the article you can ‘like’ it and share it in two simple steps.

You can then organise these categories into ‘Lists’ to suit the industry you’re working for. For example for NoVa Digital Media I wanted to source articles dealing with the latest news in Technology:

With LinkedIn’s acquisition you can now sign into Pulse via your LinkedIn Account, and faster searches with more discovery tools.

New Twitter Layout

Over the next few days you will be hearing more and more about the new Twitter layout and it’s comparisons to Facebook. Of more importance however, are it’s implications for businesses and how they can take advantage.

So what are the changes and how can we utilise them to our advantage?

1) The First thing that stands out to us is the new cover photo option. This is what screams Facebook when you first see the new profile layout. Rather than have a small header behind the profile picture it now takes prime position and stretches across the entire page. This means that unlike Facebook the cover photo is now a lot larger and some could argue more effective.

Like with Facebook the profile picture now moves to the left and lower down the page cutting into the cover photo slightly.

Tip 1: Twitter advises that the best dimensions for your profile picture is now a much larger 400 x 400 px

Tip 2: As you can guess the new header turned cover photo is now 1500 x 500 px rather than the much smaller 520 x 260 px

Tip 3: Business’ should take advantage of this new space for Call to Actions and to show off products that they are proud of

Tip 4: USe your space wisely. Whilst it will be a great new way of promoting new information and Calls To Actions when on a mobile device the profile picture returns to the centre of the Header therefore blocking out parts of the Header that were visible on your desktop.

2) Once you’ve used the new Twitter for a couple of minutes you notice that the profile page has a far more Facebook feel to it. Your tweets are much larger making them easier to read and your profile information is now underneath your profile picture much like the ‘About’ information on your Facebook Profile.

Tip 5: Again this makes the information easier to read and access and should therefore be used by companies to stress important information about their company.

3) Perhaps our new favourite feature, and one that is very different from good old Facebook, is the new ability to ‘Pin’ a tweet to your timeline – you cannot however, pin other users tweets to your timeline. By ‘pinning’ a tweet you keep it at the top of your profile timeline so that every time a user clicks on your profile that is the first pin they see.

What does this mean for business’? Well one of the biggest problems companies face is that the average life span of a tweet is extremely short, the longest being around 2 hours however the more followers you have and the more accounts they follow cuts this time dramatically and for some will only last a few minutes.

By giving accounts the option to ‘pin’ a tweet it means that they can have one tweet remain static at the top of their page. If however, you decide to ‘pin’ another tweet it will replace the previously pinned tweet which will then go back to it’s position prior to ‘pinning’. This means that the pinned tweets do not get simply pushed down your timeline but virtually disappear if they were pinned quite a while ago.

Tip 6: ‘Pin’ those tweets that have a link that you wish to promote, or a competition/offer you want to push.

4) Visual Changes

Tweets that are performing well based we’re guessing on retweets, replies and favourites will appear larger in your stream drawing the eye to these tweets more than others.

You may notice that your photo gallery layout has changed as well and some could argue that it looks quite similar to another Social Media platform we all know and love, Pinterest (combine this with the new ‘pin’ feature and it’s not just Facebook who seems to have been flattered through imitation).

Tip 7: Photos are now easier to view and easier to select making it a useful tool for promoting certain products.

5) If you were to then visit a profile who has switched over Twitter tells you how many mutual followers you have underneath a more prominent direct Tweet box.

This means that you can easily see how interconnected your networks are and if it is worth going through their followers or not.

6) Don’t Panic!

Not everything has changed and more importantly if you’re not a fan you do not have to switch over. . . yet. Twitter have not mentioned when or if they plan to make these changes permanent but like Pinterest and unlike Facebook, they are giving you a chance to choose whether you change over.

Additionally your Home, Notification, and Discovery Pages have not changed meaning that your background graphics can stay exactly the same.
